Most traditional PT or Chiro spots will never progress you past the yellow Theraband. Time to elevate your rehab.

💥SHOULDER ABDUCTION PROGRESSION💥
1) Banded shoulder abduction - Easy starting point if you have an acute injury or chronic shoulder pain. Make sure it’s challenging by increasing resistance—once it’s too easy, time to move on.

2) Isometric holds - Try these at different angles and make sure to hold long enough to fatigue the muscle. I like to hold at each position for 15s in each rep to make it challenging.

3) Lateral raises (short lever) - Keeping your elbows bent can decrease pain initially to allow us the ability to work on more weighted abduction.

4) Lateral raises - More challenging than short lever. Progress to these when you feel comfortable.

5) Cable lateral raises- These can be very challenging. Start off with light weight and increase as you make progress.

Shoulder Pain Sucks!

As someone who has dealt with shoulder pain on and off, it can really hinder your ability to do the things you love.

Rehab for the shoulder doesn’t have to be that complicating—regardless of whether it’s an scute injury or chronic pain.

Here are a few quick Do’s and Don’ts:
✅ Make sure the issue is not stemming from a problem in the cervical spine.
🚫 Recommend a patient to completely stop lifting weights or doing daily activities that involve the shoulder. This is case-by-case, but as a general recommendation, in most cases stopping all activity for a prolonged time frame will do more harm than good.
✅ Program shoulder/cuff strengthening exercises using strength training principles. Meaning: PROGRESS the exercise beyond the yellow band.
🚫Order unnecessary MRI. A trial of care using progressive exercise and treatment can cut costs and reduce surgery when not indicated.
